Kari, Priscilla Russel. 1995. Tanaina Plantlore Dena'ina K'et'una. Fourth edition. Alaska Natural History Association, National Park Service, and Alaska Native Language Center, University of Alaska, Fairbanks. 5.5" x 8.5" . Paperback, 207 pages.
This is an excellent little book by an experienced Alaskan ethnobotanist and ethnographer, co-author of Dena'ina Elena Tanaina Country (1982). There are many color photographs and line drawings that illustrate the Dena'ina use of plants and aid in their identification. From the foreword:
"This book describes how the Dena'ina, also called the Tanaina, Athabascans of Alaska use many of the plants that grow in their country. The book also includes a physical description of each plant and information regarding the environment it grows in, as well as its Dena'ina, scientific, and English names. The ethnobotanical information was gathered primarily through informal interviews with Dena'ina people through field observation over a period of about eleven years, from 1974 through 1985. Fresh plant specimens were used for identification purposes wherever possible, although dried specimens, photographs, and drawings were used sometimes to supplement the fresh specimens, or were used when the fresh specimens were not available. The information presented here regarding plant usage has not been scientifically tested or verified. Any experimentation you do is at your own risk."
